How to Soft Wash a Facade: A Step-by-Step Guide

Soft washing is a low-pressure cleaning method that uses biodegradable detergents to break down dirt, algae, mould and lichen on exterior surfaces. Unlike high-pressure jet washing, it cleans without driving water behind cladding, lifting paint or eroding render.

If your home's facade looks tired, streaked or green-tinged, a proper soft wash will restore it in a single visit — and the results typically last two to three years.

1. Inspect the facade first

Walk the perimeter and note painted timber, render, brick, weatherboard and any sensitive trims. Check for cracked render, lifting paint, open weep holes and damaged seals around windows — these need to be addressed before any water touches them.

2. Protect plants and fixtures

Pre-wet garden beds along the wall line and cover delicate plants with a tarp. Mask power points, light fittings and intercoms. The detergents we use are plant-safe at the dilutions applied, but a thorough rinse afterwards keeps everything healthy.

3. Apply the soft wash solution

Using a low-pressure pump (under 500 PSI), apply the detergent from the bottom up. Working bottom-up prevents streaking on dry surfaces. Let the solution dwell for 10–15 minutes — you'll see the algae and grime visibly lift.

4. Rinse top down with fresh water

Rinse from the top down with a wide-fan nozzle at low pressure. Take your time around windows, vents and eaves. A proper rinse is what separates a professional finish from a DIY job that streaks a week later.
