How to Professionally Clean Windows: Tips and Techniques for Sparkling Results

Streak-free windows aren't magic — they're the result of the right tools, the right solution and the right technique. Here's how a professional window cleaner approaches a job.

The tools that make the difference

A proper squeegee with a fresh rubber, a microfibre-sleeved T-bar, lint-free detailing cloths and a bucket of clean solution. Paper towels and household sprays will always leave streaks — they aren't designed for glass at scale.

Mix a simple solution

A few drops of pure dish soap in a bucket of warm water is all you need for residential work. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners on tinted glass and laminated double-glazing.

Work top-down

Always clean from the top of the pane downwards. Gravity pulls drips onto unclean glass, not finished glass. Wet the entire pane with the T-bar, then pull the squeegee in a single confident stroke from top to bottom, wiping the blade between passes.

Detail the edges

Run a dry microfibre around the perimeter to pick up any beading. This is the step most DIY jobs skip — and it's exactly where you'll spot streaks an hour later when the sun hits.

Don't forget the frames and tracks

Vacuum tracks before washing, wipe frames with a damp cloth, and clean flyscreens separately with a soft brush.
